The 61-year-old Oscar winner, who won for his roles in Training Day and Glory, addressed those who think the Academy’s selection process is unfair.
“Yeah, and so what? You going to give up? If you’re looking for an excuse, you’ll find one,” he responded, adding that you can find excuses “wherever you like.”
“Can’t live like that,” he said. “Just do the best you can do.”
Washington has received a total of six Oscar nominations and is generating Oscar buzz for his latest film, Fences, which he produced, directed and starred in. Fences is based on the play by August Wilson.
The film also stars Viola Davis, Mykelti Williamson and Jovan Adepo. Washington is set to bring all of Wilson’s 10 plays to life at HBO, according to CBS.
The 60 Minutes interview with Washington will air Sunday, Dec. 18 at 7:30 p.m. ET and 7 p.m. PT.
